Yosemite stargazing: where to look up, and when

The first time I sat at the top of Olmsted Point at one in the morning in late July with no headlamp and let my eyes adjust for ten minutes, I realized I'd been doing the night sky wrong for most of my adult life. I had assumed, as most people raised in cities or suburbs assume, that stars were small bright points scattered against a black background. They are not. The actual sky over the Yosemite high country in late July, with no moon, on a moonless night with no smoke, is so densely packed with stars that the famous constellations are buried inside thousands of others, and the Milky Way is not a thin line of light. It is a textured, layered river running across the sky from horizon to horizon, with dark lanes of dust visible in the brighter sections and individual star clouds resolvable to the naked eye.

This is what most of human history saw every night. We have, in the past hundred years or so, mostly stopped seeing it.

Yosemite is one of the few places on the West Coast where the version of the sky our ancestors saw is still available. Not every night. Not in every season. Not from every spot. But often enough, in the right places, and with enough magnitude that the experience is in a different category from a dark-sky park designation or a "let's go look at the stars" parking-lot stop.

This is where to go, when to go, and how to think about the night sky in this park.

What "dark sky" actually means

A short framework, because the term gets thrown around loosely.

The Bortle scale is the standard reference for night-sky darkness. It runs from 1 (the darkest possible natural sky) to 9 (an inner-city sky with significant light pollution). Most American suburbs read 6 or 7. Most of Yosemite Valley reads 3 or 4 (the Valley has light pollution from in-park lodging and parking lights, plus glow from outside the park). The Yosemite high country (Tioga Road area, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point) reads 2, occasionally 1 in the right spots.

The difference between Bortle 4 and Bortle 2 is enormous. At Bortle 4, the Milky Way is faintly visible. At Bortle 2, it casts shadows. At Bortle 4, you can see roughly 2,000 stars. At Bortle 2, you can see closer to 6,000.

This is not a small upgrade. This is the difference between a sky and the sky.

The other variable is moon phase. A full moon at Bortle 1 is brighter than a new moon at Bortle 4. For Milky Way viewing or photography, the rule is to plan around the moon. New moon nights or nights when the moon hasn't risen yet (or has already set) are when the dark sky shows up. Half moon and brighter moons wash out the fainter sky.

Plan trips around the moon. Most stargazers use a phone app (Stellarium, SkySafari, PhotoPills) to know when each phase peaks and when the moon rises and sets on a given date.

When to go for the Milky Way

The galactic core of the Milky Way (the brightest, most photogenic section, including the Sagittarius region) is visible from the Northern Hemisphere from approximately April through October, with peak visibility in June through August.

The core rises in the southeast in late spring (rises in the early morning hours), is highest in the sky in midsummer (rises mid-evening), and is sinking in the west in early fall (visible early evening, sets mid-evening). For the densest, most dramatic Milky Way views, late June through early August on a moonless night gets you the core arching nearly overhead between roughly 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Outside core season (November through March), the visible Milky Way is the less-dense northern arm, plus prominent winter constellations like Orion. Winter skies can still be dramatic, especially with snow-covered foregrounds and clear high-pressure weather, but the famous "river of light" galactic core is below the horizon.

If your goal is the core, plan for mid-July through mid-August on a new moon week. Plan for any other dark sky, and almost any clear, moonless Yosemite night will deliver something extraordinary.

Where to go: by accessibility

Three tiers of stargazing locations, depending on how much effort you're willing to put in.

Tier one: drive to it

These are the spots accessible by paved road with no real walking required. They're the right answer for most casual visitors and for anyone with mobility constraints.

Glacier Point. The classic. At 7,200 feet, with an open western and southern horizon, almost no nearby light, and a paved walk of a few hundred feet from the parking lot, this is one of the best drive-to dark-sky spots in any National Park. The Park Service runs public Star Parties at Glacier Point most Saturdays in summer, when local astronomy clubs set up telescopes and rangers give talks. These are some of the best free educational events in the park. Roughly June through August, depending on the road being open and the schedule for any given year.

The trade-off: Glacier Point Road closes mid-October to late May, so this is a summer-only option.

Tunnel View. Lower in elevation (5,400 feet) and more affected by Valley light, but a real dark-sky spot in winter when the in-park lights are dimmer and atmospheric haze is at its lowest. The view of the Milky Way arching over Half Dome, with El Capitan on the left and Bridalveil Fall on the right, is one of the most-photographed night-sky compositions in any park. Best in summer for the core, but also worth visiting on cold winter nights for Orion and the winter Milky Way.

Olmsted Point. On Tioga Road, at 8,000 feet, with broad views in all directions and very little nearby light. The granite slabs in the parking area give you a flat, comfortable surface to lay on or set up a tripod on. One of the better drive-to spots in the park during the Tioga Road season (late May through October).

Tenaya Lake. The east end has a small parking area and beach with reflective water. The Milky Way over the lake at midnight is one of the better photographic compositions in the high country.

Tuolumne Meadows. Multiple pullouts along the road with broad meadow views. The combination of low horizons (because of the meadow) and high elevation (8,600 feet) is unusual for stargazing in most parks.

Tier two: walk a little for it

These spots take a short hike, which gets you away from any remaining road glare and into more comfortable solitude.

Sentinel Dome. A 2.2-mile round-trip hike from the Sentinel Dome and Taft Point trailhead on Glacier Point Road. The summit at 8,122 feet has a 360-degree view, no nearby light, and a flat granite surface to set up on. This is one of the great Sierra dark-sky spots accessible via short trail. Doable as a sunset-into-dark hike with headlamps for the descent.

Taft Point. Same trailhead. Different direction. The cliff edge offers a dramatic foreground for night-sky photography (the Valley below, Cathedral Rocks on the far wall). Bring a friend; the cliff at night is genuinely dangerous if you're not paying attention.

Pothole Dome. A short, easy granite walk from the west end of Tuolumne Meadows. The summit gives you a low-effort high-elevation viewpoint with the entire meadow basin spread out in front and the Milky Way often visible directly overhead.

Tier three: backpack to it

For the most committed stargazers, the wilderness lakes and high passes deliver the absolute darkest, quietest skies available in the park.

Cathedral Lakes. The granite shelf at the south end of Lower Cathedral Lake gives you a clear southern horizon, near-total isolation, and the Milky Way reflecting in the lake on still nights. Possible as a long day hike with a midnight return, but more reasonably done as a wilderness camp.

Mount Hoffmann. The peak at the geographical center of the park, 10,850 feet, with views in every direction. Reachable as a strenuous day hike from May Lake. Stargazing from the summit on a clear August night is one of the experiences the park makes possible and most visitors never have.

Glen Aulin and beyond. The Tuolumne River canyon, especially in the Glen Aulin to Waterwheel Falls area, is dramatically dark and far from any light source. Wilderness camping required.

These spots reward the effort. They require permits for overnight stays.

The Star Parties

Worth its own section.

The Yosemite Star Parties at Glacier Point are run by Bay Area amateur astronomy clubs in cooperation with the Park Service. They typically run on Friday and Saturday nights in June, July, and August (weather permitting), with local astronomers setting up telescopes for public viewing. The events are free. They draw a few hundred people on busy nights.

The format is essentially "astronomers at the parking lot with telescopes pointed at things, you walk up and look." You'll see Saturn and its rings, Jupiter and its moons, the Andromeda galaxy, various nebulae, double stars, star clusters, and depending on the night, the Moon. The amateur astronomers running the events are passionate and generous with their explanations. Bring kids. Bring questions. Bring a red flashlight if you have one (red light doesn't disrupt night vision).

The schedule for 2026 should be posted on the NPS Yosemite events calendar by late spring. Check there before planning a trip around a star party.

A note on light, courtesy, and how not to ruin everyone's night

A short list of things to do and not do at any dark-sky location.

Use a red headlamp or red flashlight. Almost all modern headlamps have a red-light setting. Use it after dark. White light blows out night vision (yours and everyone else's) for 20 to 30 minutes. Red light preserves it. This is basic dark-sky etiquette and almost no first-time stargazer knows it.

Don't aim your phone screen at people. Phone screens are basically white-light spotlights. Dim your screen all the way before checking messages. Or use the camera app's red filter where available.

Don't use a flash to take photos. This is in the same family as headlamp etiquette. A flash at a dark-sky location ruins night vision for everyone within 50 feet for 30 minutes. There is no reason to use a flash for a Milky Way photo. If you need a star photo, use a tripod and a long exposure. (Yosemite photography apps and starter guides are everywhere; the basics are 15 to 30 second exposure, ISO 1600 to 3200, lens at maximum aperture, focus on infinity.)

Be quiet near other stargazers. Sound travels at night. The astronomer who set up at Olmsted Point at 9 p.m. and is taking a 60-second exposure does not want to hear your phone speaker playing Spotify.

Stay on the trail, even at night. Yosemite's high country has fragile alpine plants, hidden drops, and sleeping wildlife. Don't bushwhack in the dark.

Watch the weather. Afternoon thunderstorms can develop into nighttime electrical activity in the high country. Don't be on an exposed dome at midnight if there's lightning in the forecast.

Layer for cold. The temperature at 8,000 feet on a clear summer night drops fast after sunset. By midnight, it can be in the 40s. Bring a warm jacket, a hat, and gloves. Sitting still under the stars chills you faster than hiking.

What you'll see

A short, non-exhaustive guide to what to look for once your eyes have adjusted.

The Milky Way's galactic core. Visible in summer toward the south. The brightest, densest section of the band. Once you see it from a Bortle 2 site, you'll never confuse it with the version most people see from suburbia.

Andromeda Galaxy (M31). The closest large galaxy to ours, visible to the naked eye in fall as a faint smudge in the constellation Andromeda. At dark sites, you can see the elongated disk shape clearly. You're looking at light that left 2.5 million years ago.

The Pleiades (M45). A young open cluster, visible to the naked eye in fall and winter. Six or seven stars are obvious; with binoculars or dark-adapted vision, dozens are visible.

Saturn and Jupiter. Visible most years to the naked eye as bright "stars" that don't twinkle. With even modest binoculars, Saturn shows as oval (its rings) and Jupiter shows four moons.

Meteor showers. The Perseids (mid-August) and the Geminids (mid-December) are the two major showers visible from Yosemite. Plan trips around these. The Perseids in particular are well-timed for the high country, peaking when Tioga Road is at its busiest.

Satellites. Pass overhead constantly. The brighter ones are easy to spot moving steadily across the sky. Starlink "trains" (long lines of satellites moving together after a launch) are an increasingly common sight and a complicated thing for stargazers, depending on your view of orbital infrastructure.

The International Space Station. Visible as a very bright, fast-moving "star" in many predictable evening passes. NASA's Spot The Station website tells you exactly when and where. The ISS at Yosemite, with the Milky Way as a backdrop, is one of the better human-and-cosmos pairings you can witness.

What about photography

A short note for those interested.

The Milky Way over Yosemite landscape is one of the best landscape-astrophotography combinations in the world. The basic setup:

You can produce results from a basic DSLR or even a recent smartphone with a "night mode" feature. The high-end results require a full-frame body and a fast wide lens, but the gap between "any camera" and "good camera" is smaller than it used to be.

For composition, the standard Yosemite shots include the Milky Way over Half Dome (from various Valley vantage points), over Cathedral Peak (from Cathedral Lakes), over Tunnel View, and over Tenaya Lake. Each has its own season for when the core aligns with the foreground.

PhotoPills and Stellarium are the apps almost every Milky Way photographer uses to plan when the alignment will work for a given location and date.

The takeaway

Yosemite has some of the darkest skies still accessible by car in California, and one of the better dark-sky cultures (the Star Parties, the ranger programs, the active community of night-sky photographers) of any park. The high country in summer on a moonless night is a different experience than the Valley at any time, in a way that's hard to describe to anyone who hasn't done it.

Plan for a moonless night in July or August. Drive to Glacier Point, Olmsted Point, or Tenaya Lake. Bring layers. Bring a red light. Lay on the granite for 30 minutes with no phone, no agenda, no schedule.

You will see something most people raised in this country never see, and it will not look the way you expected.
