Tioga Road (Highway 120) in Yosemite National Park opens Friday, May 15, 2026. That is well ahead of the long-term average opening of May 28. Glacier Point Road already opened on May 9. No day-use reservations are required to enter Yosemite this year, just a standard entrance pass.

There is a difference between "the road is open" and "Tuolumne Meadows is open for the season," and opening weekend lives entirely in the first one. On Friday the pavement is plowed, but most of what you might picture, the store, the grill, the lodge, the campground services, the wilderness center staff. All of that comes online over the following weeks.
What you get this weekend is the road itself. A ribbon of asphalt through twelve-foot snow walls, glassy half-frozen lakes, snowmelt creeks running hard, and a high country still pulling itself out of winter. That is a spectacular thing to drive through. It is also a spectacular thing to be unprepared for.
Snow conditions in mid-May still include big drifts at Olmsted Point, ice along Tenaya Lake's shaded shore, and lingering snowpack on most trails above 8,500 feet.
Here is the honest breakdown.
Pack like you are heading into the backcountry, even if you are just driving up for the day.
Gas up before you start climbing. Crane Flat is the only fuel inside the park on the western side, and it is pay-at-pump only. On the east side, your next gas is in Lee Vining, about 45 minutes past Tuolumne. Bring all your water (two liters per person minimum if you are walking anywhere), bring all your food (sandwiches, snacks, a thermos of coffee), and plan for vault toilets. There is nothing to buy along Tioga Road on opening weekend, and there is no potable water. Cell service is essentially zero from Crane Flat to Lee Vining, so download offline maps before you leave the Valley.
Carry chains, layers, and a full tank. Tioga Pass tops out at 9,945 feet. Morning temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s, even when the Valley is mild. Black ice at dawn and dusk is real, especially near Olmsted Point and the climb to the pass.
Arrive early. The Park Service recommends arriving before 8 a.m. to avoid congestion and full parking lots, especially on opening weekend. Sunrise at Olmsted is one of the best photographs you will ever take in Yosemite, and you will share it with almost no one.
Here is how I would build the day, and how I do build the day, every single year that the road opens.
You can see Half Dome from a lot of angles in Yosemite, but only from Olmsted Point do you see its back side, the broad northern face, with Clouds Rest rising to its left and Tenaya Canyon dropping away below. The half-mile nature trail south of the parking lot is usually walkable on opening weekend; the slickrock catches the sun and dries fast, even with snow patches in the shaded hollows. The glacial erratics scattered across the polished granite are doing a lot of teaching, if you let them. Each one was carried here by an ice sheet and left when the ice melted out from under it.
Wear shoes with grip. Bring sunglasses. Snow glare at altitude is fierce.
Ten minutes further east, Tenaya Lake will likely still be ice-rimmed on opening weekend, with open water in the middle reflecting Tenaya Peak. Park at the east beach pullout. The walk down to the sand is short and easy, and it is one of the few places where you can be at the edge of an alpine lake in mid-May without committing to a real hike.
The full Tenaya Lake Loop Trail crosses the inlet on a boardwalk that Yosemite Conservancy donors helped fund and then traces the south shore through forest. That south shore holds snow and mud longer than anywhere else in the area. If you want to attempt the full 2.5-mile loop, bring waterproof boots, expect slush, and stay on the trail. The revegetation work along the loop is fragile, and meadow soils take years to recover from a single boot print in the wrong place.
For most people, an unhurried hour along the east beach is exactly the right move.
A few more miles east, the road drops into the great open of Tuolumne. The meadow itself will be a patchwork of last year's brown grass, the first hints of green, sheets of meltwater, and lingering drifts. Do not walk across the meadow. Pull off at one of the half-dozen designated pullouts, stand at the edge, and let the Cathedral Range do the work.
If you want to stretch your legs, two short options are reliable on opening weekend:
Skip Lukens Lake, May Lake, Cathedral Lakes, and Lembert Dome's summit. Those trails are snowbound at this point in May, and a few of them will not be reasonable until late June.
This is the part that makes opening weekend a full trip rather than a day in the park. Once you cross Tioga Pass at 9,945 feet, the road drops more than 3,000 feet in twelve miles down to the Mono Basin, and the world changes underneath you. Granite gives way to volcanic landscape. The Sierra wall stands behind you, the Great Basin opens ahead, and Mono Lake spreads out below with its white tufa towers and a summer population of up to two million migratory birds.
Three pullouts are worth the brake-tap on the way down. Tioga Lake just below the pass, where Mount Dana sits in the reflection. Ellery Lake a mile farther. And the Mono Lake Vista Point before the canyon drops, where the Mono Basin opens up for the first time.
Lee Vining has more lore than it has dining options, and not all of the lore is still earned.
Whoa Nellie Deli at the Tioga Gas Mart is the famous one. The fish tacos built its reputation in the late 1990s, and they are still on the menu. The original chef, Matt Toomey, left in 2012 to open his own place in Mammoth, and over the years the deli has slipped a little. Portions are still generous, the view of Mono Lake from the picnic tables is still wonderful, and the Thursday and Sunday evening live music is still a great scene. But prices have crept up, the food is more uneven than it used to be, and the "world famous" billing is doing a lot of heavy lifting now. Go for the experience and the view. Order the tacos and the fries. Manage your expectations.
Latte Da Coffee Café at the El Mono Motel, just down Highway 395 in town, is what I find myself recommending more often these days. It is small, family-run, and all-organic. There is a garden out back with a few tables, and the pace is exactly the opposite of the Mobil-station bustle. Pastries, espresso, an unhurried breakfast. The El Mono Motel itself is one of those quirky eleven-room places that the eastern Sierra still has a few of, every room decorated differently, and the café is folded right into it. If you are doing a full day on the road, Latte Da in the morning and a Whoa Nellie picnic in the afternoon is a nice way to honor both eras.
Other reliable options in town: Nicely's for a classic diner breakfast, Bodie Mike's for barbecue, the Lee Vining Market for picnic supplies.
If you have a few hours left in the afternoon, drive south of Lee Vining on Highway 395 to South Tufa at the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve (south on 395, then east on Highway 120, about ten miles all told). Three dollars per adult, free under 16, and your America the Beautiful pass covers it. A boardwalk and a one-mile loop carry you through a forest of calcium carbonate towers that grew underwater at freshwater springs, then emerged when the lake dropped after Los Angeles began diverting the basin's streams in 1941. The story of how the lake was saved is one of the great American conservation stories, and the Mono Lake Committee Information Center and Bookstore in downtown Lee Vining (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily) is the right place to learn it. Their HD film, "The Mono Lake Story," is a roughly twenty-five-minute primer.
In mid-May the lake is filling with nesting California gulls (the eared grebes and phalaropes that make Mono Lake famous arrive later, in summer and fall). By August the shoreline is carpeted in dark, shifting bands of brine flies. If you have never seen a million birds eating a trillion flies, it is something to come back for.
For the high country on opening weekend, the difference between a good day and a frustrating one is footwear.

Early-season Tioga Road is the most fragile version of Tioga Road. The meadow soils are saturated. The vegetation is just emerging. The trails are soft. A single off-trail boot print in the wrong place in May can leave a scar that will still be visible in August.
Stay on trails. Stay on boardwalks. Use the pullouts. Pack out everything you bring in. Give wildlife room (50 yards from black bears is the park standard). Bear spray is not permitted in Yosemite. Store all scented items in lockers or canisters, even snacks in your car at a trailhead.
The whole reason the high country is worth visiting is that someone in 1864, and 1890, and 1916, and 1984, and every year since, decided it was worth protecting. Treat it like the inheritance it is.
